cirrus sky hawk drift
blue haze in the autumn air
and my mouth is dry.
– Greg Boddy

2 Tough and Crazy people get together and consider life. They contemplate the coming of AUTUMN. Strange SUMMA that was. Lots of rains and Doonahs on the bed right through even in Brisbane and Bilambil. They contemplate the 2nd Autumn they will spend together. How will this be ? Here we go. Moving in together. Fulltime student and disability pensioner. Also known as a research assistant. So Autumn is here . Mostly because it didn’t leave this time. Refused to give way to either Winter or Summer and barely moved aside for Spring. Clouds covering. Rain falling. Cool and Sweet.

I cannot endure to waste anything as precious as autumn sunshine by staying in the house. So I spend almost all the daylight hours in the open air.
Nathaniel Hawthorne

falling leaves

John Bailey
Autumn, A Haiku Year.

Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.
George Eliot

Summer makes me drowsy,
Autumn makes me sing,
Winter’s pretty lousy,
but I hate Spring.
– Dorothy Parker

The leaves fall, the wind blows, and the farm country slowly changes from the summer cottons into its winter wools.

The unspoiled colors of a late summer night,
The wind howling through the lofty pines –
The feel of the autumn approaching;
The swaying bamboos keep resonating,
And shedding tears of dew at dawn;
Only those who exert themselves fully
Will attain the Way,
But even if you abandon all for the ancient path of meditation,
You can never forget the meaning of sadness.

– Zen Master Dogen, Verses from the Mountain of Eternal Peace,
Translated by Steven Heine, p. 133
