SHIPS

2 Tough and Crazy people get together and consider life. They contemplate the Surrey ! and the Broxbournebury. They consider Patrick McNally and Judith Kilfroy McDermott and the children. Ships at sea and rotting hulks. Plagues and pestilences and steamers into the Clarence River. Up on the Bellingen the Doepel was built. Ships Look grand in port BUT THAT’S NOT WHAT THEY’RE BUILT FOR. I had a canoe once on South Arm Road. I liked to get onto the river before dawn. I like city cats in Brisbane too. The Bells ( on my mother’s side) were fishermen in Laurieton. And the uncles , on my mother’s side as well were shark fishermen at Maroubra and built the rock pools there. I would imagine with dynamite. They had small boats. I sailed once on a ketch rigged yacht called UTIEKAH III which is still showing on the Net. Huon Pine it was built from. We sailed out from Port Douglas. South. Stopped at Goat Island Just off the Palm Islands for food. That involved a rifle. And hugging a barracoota near as big as me and bleeding.

Next to blood relationships, come water relationships.

It is a place where great boats are baying at the harbor’s mouth,
Where great ships are putting out to sea;
It is the place where great boats are blowing in the gulf of night,
And where the river, the dark and secret river, full of strange time,
Is forever flowing by us to the sea…

Thomas Wolfe, American Landscape

Walnuts… with engines the size of starships!”

“My Mom said she learned how to swim when someone took her out in the lake and threw her off the boat. I said, ‘Mom, they weren’t trying to teach you how to swim.'”-Paula Poundston

I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time – like tears in rain. Time to die. – Roy Batty, in Blade Runner (movie) by Ridley Scott & Philip K. Dic

FROM MY FAVOURITE GAME. Age of Empires Age: Stone
Prerequisites: You must have built the Town Center.
Cost: 100 Wood
Hit Points: 350
Note: The Dock lets you create boats, including the Fishing Boat, Fishing
Ship, Trade Boat, Merchant Ship, Light Transport, Heavy Transport, Scout
Ship, War Galley, Trireme, Catapult Trireme, and Juggernaught. The Dock is
also where fishing vessels deposit food and trade vessels deposit gold from
trading. Researching Architecture increases the hit points and decreases
the construction time of this building. The earliest boats were simply
tied up to rocks or trees on shore to take on or drop off cargo or were
physically pulled onto the beach. Later, wooden structures were built out
into the water to facilitate loading and unloading. Docks were also safer
for ships because ships could avoid being beached, which strained the hulls
and increased leaking. When the dock was extended beyond the shallows,
even larger ships could be tied up, farther improving efficiencies.
